Choice 1: Luke 10:1–24. “The Lord Appointed Other Seventy Also”

  1. Review Luke 10:1–24. Based on these verses, write a summary of the Lord’s counsel and instructions He gave the seventy.
He calls them and sends them out to preach the gospel. They are given power over the adversary, and promised nothing will hurt them. They are commanded to rely on the Lord and take no thought about food or shelter. The Lord will provide.
  1. Articles of Faith 1:6 states, “We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church.” Using the principles taught from Luke 10:1–2, 8–9, 17–20, write a paragraph that supports this Article of Faith.
The Lord still appoints the seventy. It is done through revelation, and the laying on of hands. Learn to love the people you serve. If they receive you then teach them the gospel. We have the priesthood here on earth again just like the prophets of old. We have power over the adversary. We can perform miracles in Christs name and cast out devils.
  1. Go to the Church’s scripture website and read the topic of “Seventy” in the Guide to the Scriptures. Describe in one or two sentences how the scriptures show the existence of this office in the priesthood.
The scriptures tell us time and time again that there is need of the seventy. Jesus called them and in later revelation commanded that more be called. He even said that we should call as many as are needed for the work.

Matthew 17:14–21. The Savior Healed a Young Man

1. Review Matthew 17:14–21, and list three things the Savior said were needed for the disciples to heal the man.

1. Faith

2. Prayer

3. Fasting

2. Read each of the following references. Next to the reference, write what it teaches about what is needed for miracles to happen.

o 3 Nephi 18:20- You must first have faith in Christ. You must also be asking for what is considered right in the eyes of God.

o Doctrine and Covenants 50:29- If you are completely clean from sin and you ask in the name of Christ it will be given to you.

o Doctrine and Covenants 42:48- If it is Gods will that you be healed and you have faith in Christ you shall be healed.

Choice 1: Matthew 14:14–21; 15:32–38. The Feeding of the Multitudes

Matthew 14:14-21

Matthew 15:32-38

How many people were present?

five thousand men, beside women and children.

four thousand men, beside women and children

What did they need?

Food

Food

What were they able to offer in an effort to meet that need?

five loaves, and two fishes

Seven loaves of bread, and a few little fishes

What words or phrases describe the Savior’s feeling toward the multitudes in their time of need?

compassion

compassion

What words or phrases describe what the Savior was able to provide for the multitudes?

a miraculous manifestation of food.

a miraculous manifestation of food.

Because we have all sinned and come short of the glory of God we cannot get back to that glory without help from the savior. Just like the multitudes could not eat without help from Christ. The Lord will make our weaknesses strong unto us if we humble ourselves. Through His grace we can attain the glory of God.

John 3:30

He must increase, but I must decrease.

John the baptist was a great man. Christ said he was the man that should prepare the way for His coming. John recognized that Jesus was the Christ. He did not try to hold on to any followers, or status he had gained. He knew and understood Gods plan. Christ was the one who had come to take away the sins of the world. Because of this John had to decrease so that Christ might increase.
We can do this in our own lives. Our personal pleasures or activities must decrease so we can have an increase of Christ in our lives. We can spend less time with a hobby and more time going to the temple, or reading scriptures with our spouses. For Christ to increase in our lives we must be willing to decrease parts of it so that he can fit.
I know that as we make more room for Christ in our lives we will feel more joy than we ever could doing anything else.

Miracles Are Evidence of Faith and God’s Power

Reference

Miracles of the Lord

Who Demonstrated Faith

Matthew 8:1-4

He healed the leper.

The leper did. He know that Jesus could make him clean.

Matthew 8:5-13

He healed the centurion's servant.

The centurion did by say believing that just Jesus's word could heal his servant.

Matthew 8:14-15

He healed her fever.

The faith would be on the sick persons part.

Matthew 8:16

He haled their sick and cast out devils.

It would have to be the faith of Christ himself and of those being healed.

Matthew 8:23-27

He calmed the seas.

The faith was that of Jesus's. His apostles lacked faith.

Matthew 8:28-34

He cast out devils.

There was a lack of faith from the towns people. the faith was that of Christs.

Matthew 9:20-22; Mark 5:25-34

The woman was healed.

The woman demonstrated great faith by believing if she but touched his cloths she would be healed.

Matthew 9:27-31

He restored their vision.

It was the faith of the blind men. It was according to their faith that they were healed.

Mark 2:1-12

he heals the sick and forgives their sins.

It was the faith of the sick and those helping the sick.

It gives me great faith knowing that our Lord and savior Jesus Christ can heal the sick and forgive sins. It is a comfort to know that he did those things. It is such a wonderful thing knowing that we can be forgiven of our sins because of the atonement of Christ. That is the greatest miricle of all.

Choice 1: Matthew 3:13–17. The Baptism of Jesus Christ

When it was written that John saw the Holy Ghost in the form of a dove it is to say that it came in the sign of a dove. Joseph Smith said " ‘The sign of the dove was instituted before the creation of the world, a witness for the Holy Ghost, and the devil cannot come in the sign of a dove. The Holy Ghost is a personage, and is in the form of a personage. It does not confine itself to the form of the dove, but in sign of the dove. The Holy Ghost cannot be transformed into a dove" It is a sign no the actual Holy Ghost.

  • Why was John hesitant to baptize Jesus?- He felt that he was unworthy to baptized jesus. He thought that he had need to be baptized by Him.
  • What is taught here about the Holy Ghost?- We know thought Joseph Smith that the dove is a token of truth and innocence. We learn that the Father will send the Holy Ghost to confirm truth as he did with the baptism of Jesus Christ.
  • Jesus Christ said He must be baptized to “fulfill all righteousness.” List three reasons why Jesus Christ was baptized (see 2 Nephi 31:6–11).
  1. He needed to be obedient to the commandments of Heavenly Father.
  2. To teach us by example that we all need to be baptized.
  3. To show us the path to return and live with Him again.
  • What evidence is found in Matthew 3:16–17 that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are three separate personages in the Godhead? - The Father was heard while the Son was in the water and the Holy Ghost was also present. All three where there. Therefore they could not all be the same being.

Mary, Mother of our Lord.

How is Mary referred to in Luke 1:28? From the account in Luke 1:26–56, make a list of Mary’s qualities that you think distinguish her as one who would be “favoured” by God with the special mission of being the mother of the mortal Messiah. Write a paragraph about one of Mary’s qualities you want to develop more fully and what difference it would make in your life.

Mary is addressed by the angel saying the following "thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee"
Mary's Qualities

  1. In verses 35-38 Mary shows great faith by just accepting and believing on the angels word.
  2. In verses 46 and 47 she demonstrates humility and great joy in our Lord and God.
The quality that I would most like to develop that Mary had would be her Faith in the things not seen. If I could have her kind of faith I would be able to better magnify my calling in church. I would also better know the will of my Father in heaven. Because I would have a greater abundance of the spirit with me. I would be a better leader of my family. I would better be able to live the commandments and be an example for those that are not following the commandments.
